Packers Release A.J. Hawk…But He’s Likely to Resign

Posted: March 3, 2011 in Uncategorized

This move probably shocked alot of people after the successful year he had, but it was expected. Why? Because of the clause in his contract that called for him to earn $10 million in 2011. It makes more sense to just cut him and build a brand new contract that may call for a big bonus but not such a high salary.

What you can expect soon though is the Packers to try to trade Nick Barnett, who is soon to be the odd-man-out once Hawk is resigned. If he isn’t traded, he will likely be released because he’s too expensive (and proud) to be a backup. He’s always been a player to voice his opinion in the media, so expect him to start requesting a trade sometime soon following Hawk’s resigning. With Hawk soon to resign, and Desmond Bishop resigned to a four-year deal during the season, the former leader of the defense, Barnett will not be happy.

Barnett is a better athlete than Bishop and likely Hawk too, but his talents aren’t that necessary as a middle man in a 3-4 defense. Somebody will definitely give him a good look though. Think of him as Jonathan Vilma when he was odd man out with the Jets a few years back. Was a great player, who was injured, deemed unnecessary for the 3-4 and found salvation in New Orleans back in the 4-3. All praise the 4-3 Defense!
