Great Move – Saints Sign Shaun Rogers

In the smartest move yet so far in free agency, the Saints have signed the 3-time Pro Bowler to a one-year contract. This is a GREAT move for the Saints for two main reasons:

1. He is returning to a 4-3 defensive scheme, which is his strong suit. While in Detroit’s 4-3 (and on a notably horrible team) he accumulated the best stats of his career and earned 2 of his Pro Bowl trips. Also, any Defensive Tackle who can have the success he did playing Nose Tackle in a 3-4 scheme will EXCEL in a 4-3 scheme because its easier for him, he is now facing 1 on 1 match-ups as opposed to 3-4’s double and triple teams.

2. It’s only a one year deal, so there there isn’t much risk being taken by the Saints.  They ranked 11th in rush defense in 2010 with two solid young starters which means they’ll be sufficient in 2011 whether he’s a factor or not. He’s an obvious upgrade over Remi Ayodele but his presence is pure benefit not neccessity, and they don’t need him to be a star in order for the team to have success again.

The Saints will now have a great three man rotation at DT with Rogers, Ayodele and Sedrick Ellis. Now they can devote at least one high pick in the draft to Defensive End where they seriously need help.
